Dr. Danielle shares with us why it is essential to see a naturopathic doctor before purchasing supplements:
- Not all supplements are created equal
In fact, some supplements have been tested and found that many didn’t even contain any of the active main ingredient1! Others contain more than they need—think artificial dyes, colours and additives.
So, what can you do to be sure you’re getting your money’s worth? A naturopathic doctor is not only trained to help you find the right treatment, but also can recommend quality supplement brands. For your individualized treatment plan, I may recommend a specific brand or I may give you a few options of brands to choose from so that you get the best quality supplement. My choice will be based on giving you the right amount of the medicinal ingredient not just the most expensive urine!
You will have the assurance that you are receiving the most effective and safe amount of an active medicinal ingredient. I also look for supplements that have are more bioavailable or absorbable and usable by your body. For instance, it is important to replace folate in a prenatal vitamin with the more usable methyltetrahydrofolate2 (say that three times fast!) or being sure your vitamin D contains a fat since vitamin D must be taken with a fat in order to be absorbed by your body. Finally, I like brands that have done third party testing to show that their formulation truly works.
- Streamlined care
Want to get the most bang for your buck? I’ll recommend treatments that get the most done, while keeping in mind your budget. This comes back to the idea that I treat the ‘root cause’. You could check with Dr. Google and think you need 5 supplements for each of your 5 concerns—I may see that you need just 1 which will target all of your issues and address the root cause.
Just because it’s ‘natural’ doesn’t mean it’s safe for you. Just because it worked for a friend, doesn’t mean it’s the best option for you. Naturopathic doctors are trained in pharmacology and pharmacognosy of both conventional medications and natural health products. I can help you determine any side effects, interactions or reasons you shouldn’t take a supplement. Since naturopathic doctors can diagnose, I can be sure that your treatment is specific to your needs, helping keep you safe and healthy.
After 4 years of undergraduate studies and 4 years of naturopathy, I’ve been trained to critically evaluate the research. To get the best treatment plan, you’ll want to be sure your treatment has scientific research to validate it. Naturopathic doctors are experts at determining this. I’ll use the evidence to determine the best dosage for your condition. Many products have beautiful advertising and design but may contain an incorrect or insubstantial dosage of what you need. I recommend supplements at the right dosage to get you the results you’re looking for.
